What to do if I have a University Hearing?

If you receive a letter stating you have a formal hearing, for a disciplinary issue or Academic Misconduct, you should contact the Students’ Union as soon as possible if you want a representative to attend with you.

The Students’ Union representative is there primarily to ensure the process takes place in line with University regulations and to make sure you understand all that takes place. Principally you will still need to respond to questions the panel may have.

In most cases you will be asked questions by a panel of University staff. If there is suspicion of Academic Misconduct you may be asked to answer questions on how you formed your piece of work; in this case it is important to prepare thoroughly by bringing in any notes you made whilst doing the essay, presentation or coursework of any kind.

In all cases it is important to remain calm; respond to the panel’s questions calmly and in full; do not be aggressive or confrontational in any way. It may be useful for you to meet with the Students’ Union representative for a short while before your hearing takes place.
