► VP Communications Manifestos

Stefan Mattison for VP Communications

A little bit about me:

I am currently President and Founder of Kingston’s Cinema Appreciation Society as well BFI representative for Kingston.

Starting up a society and trying to promote it and the BFI at Kingston has shown me how important effective communication between a University and its students are!

in running for Communications I want to make sure that Kingston students can tune into a continuous loop of Kingston related information through the SU website and current social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

UNITE KINGSTON STUDENTS THROUGH THE UNION

INVOLVE Kingston Students with one another! I want to improve communications within Kingston so all students can open up a dialogue together!

I want to make sure that Kingston students are kept in the loop with everything regarding Uni life at Kingston. Weather it be posting all the upcoming societies events or simply just communicating Kingston sports teams results, I want to make sure everyone is kept informed!

I also want to make it easier for Students to have their voice heard and hope to have regular consultations groups, whereby students can voice have their opinions directly to the Union.

INVIGORATE the SU website. I’d like to re-design the SU website making it clearer and more accessible.

Have full profiles for all societies; including a brief description of what each society does and contact details.
Keep students up-to-date with events in Kingston as well as the activities going on within the union.

IMPROVE on the success of Fresh magazine, encouraging more students to contribute and get their voices heard!

INSTIGATE a campaign for a KUSU radio station. Giving Kingston students a brand new platform to communicate with one another.

          Cat   Milne

"Hi everyone, my name is Cat Milne, I am standing for VP Communications in the upcoming student elections which are taking place 15th, 16th 17th March!” The VP (Vice President) Communications officer’s job is to make and continue improvement in communications between the university system and its students.

My skills
Not being afraid to try something new! What you see is what you get with me. You can usually hear me before you can see me, which when in a communications role is key! I have loud communication skills, 100% enthusiasm in everything I do, passion, dedication and a big sense of humor! I am skilled in photoshop, most media programs, photography and writing….

LISTENING TO YOUR CONCERNS
Main focus
To improve and promote awareness of the University's communications (through media) to the students, vastly increasing the range and quantity of audiences and participation of campaigns, meetings, events, interaction and achievements as well as just general updates on what is happening around the SU!…

What is Communications about?
Students should be able to voice concerns and feel that they are heard. Importantly they can use the University's media as a platform for promoting their ideas and concerns. The media should be focused on the students, listening to how they want the media to be operated and implementing their ideas. Students should feel comfortable coming forward with new ideas and believe that they can use the VP of Communications as a force to propel their opinions and concepts forward. I hope that the students can feel able to come to me with any problem. I might not always be able to solve it but I promise I'll do my best...

My aim this year
Finding out exactly what students want from the University media and being able to meet their demands. Increased awareness of the media, increased participation, more people reading the University Fresh Magazine and more people being involved with its production and features. Then there's the SU website, which should be a fun, enjoyable experience that unites every member of the Kingston University community no matter what course or society or cultural background you are from… collaboration and interaction are key!

REPRESENTING YOU
I believe that a Students Union is all about representing the interests of students. For the last two years I have worked for the SU in the marketing department as an ambassador, been a PAL mentor, worked the open days and Freshers weeks, studied media, culture and dance and been Vice President of Wine Society… So I have been involved in university life A LOT!!!

If elected I would:
• Work closely with student reps and try to increase communication between course reps and union representatives.
• Aim to find out exactly what you guys and gals (students) want me to do and your knowledge/likes and concerns about the student's union
• As your sabbatical officer it will be my duty to make sure that all of the services and activities of the student's union are relevant, interesting & accessible to you.
• Try and achieve better, faster communication between the university and you guys with regards to term & exam dates, lecture changes and clashes and work back.

Overall I do not wish to bore you with more writing, but feel free to talk to me in person!!!!

Thanks for showing interest and VOTE CAT FOR COMMS!!!!

          VP Communications
          Policies:
·         Have a better presence on campus, which in turn, will help to raise the profile of the SU and increase student involvement with the SU itself and the services it offers.
·         Help to organise and promote more events, such as a Student Prom, Music/Dance and Drama events, and also work alongside student initiatives for events, helping them build and become a success.
·         Improve communication to students about important events such as the AGM, poor turnouts make it hard for any changes/motions to be passed.
·         Make student opinions heard, for example working alongside campaigns and initiatives such as SOS (Support Our Sports) and also the ‘Speakers Corner’ idea, in order to promote freedom of speech.
·         Make the Fresh/Re-fresh Magazine more regular, and more widely received. Ensure it works as a platform for students to be heard and promote themselves, as well as being informative.
·         Improve communication between campuses, making them less secluded from one another.
·         Invigorate our SU bar! A touch of modernisation will help make it a more appealing space to socialise.
·         Better careers advice. Provide students with better support in gaining work experience before graduation.
·         Have SU staff members better engaged and informed with what’s going on within the SU.
·         More awareness of our student rights. For example the fact we are subject to ever increasing Student Fees.
·         Campaign for a better, bigger graduation venue.
·         Create a campaign for the return of the Graduation Ball, who wants to graduate but not celebrate?!

I want to enhance the student experience by making it easier for students to get involved with the Student Union. Whilst doing this I also hope to raise our Student Unions profile both within our University and amongst other Student Unions. The stronger our Union becomes, the easier it will become to communicate and campaign for change. Our Uni is very diverse, and by making the Student Union the epicentre of our university we will be bringing people together, and creating a sense of social unity around our campuses.

I am devoted to ensuring that my policies become a reality, and strongly believe that my communications skills will support me in doing this. I am a determined and motivated candidate who will help to ensure that your university experience is both a valuable and memorable one!
