Joshua Ogunleye
For Student President

MY MANIFESTO

I am asking you all to vote for me, Joshua Ogunleye, for President as I promise to fight to defend all students’ rights and to organise an end to fees and vicious cuts. I am a member of the Young Socialists Student Society.

As a third year student at Kingston University, in my experience, students need much more support from their Students Union in times of growing fees, cuts in courses and the day to day hardship of finding jobs after graduation.

When elected I intend to do everything possible to fight for students’ rights, as well as improving facilities on campus so that students enrich their experience at Kingston University.

What I stand for:

l Kingston University students should have access to better facilities and I will carry forward the SOS campaign until we win. Our activities should be student led and student organised. We need better facilities for societies and an end to cuts that have hit the sports clubs and other facilities.

l A separate IT room, not used for lectures etc, and wireless printing throughout the campus, plus 24 hour opening at Knights Park LRC.

l We need more communication between faculties and students.

l Defence of free state education, abolish tuition fees and halt the cuts in facilities. The loss of funding for universities is driving them towards private funding. This must be halted as it reduces the quality of teaching and leaves students with a third rate education.

l Support our lecturers’ against the huge attacks on their jobs. A united struggle, and if necessary an occupation of the whole university, will stop our courses from being axed.

l Stand firm on our decision to stop the army recruiting students on our campus. Young people should not be forced to fight for imperialism, maybe lose their lives, to fight a war that we do not agree with.

l Force the NUS leaders to actively oppose the rapidly increasing tuition fees, the cuts in university facilities and plans to privatise education, otherwise I will campaign for these leaders to be removed and replaced by student leaders who will fight for their members.

Students must be given a louder voice in our Students Union with fortnightly student forums, to bring the course reps together with students, to take up all issues that concern students and improve our conditions.

I know that large numbers of students, determined to finish their courses and obtain good degrees, suffer much hardship. There is a shortage of decent accommodation, making many travel long distances paying expensive fares. The growing cost of fees, courses and books is particularly hard with most students having to work, sometimes do two or three jobs, just to stay at university.

Students should be free to study and to learn without these burdens and I will campaign alongside others for a Student leadership that will fight this government and its attacks. I will fight for an end to this bankrupt capitalist system that is making students and young people pay for its crisis.

I want a world where young people are respected, encouraged to learn and have a future to look forward to.

Vote Joshua Ogunleye for Student

kay Raven
Manifesto for Kay Raven, running for President.
It's not every day you get to be asked to represent your fellow colleagues and by choosing to vote for me today you have enhanced my chances of doing so.
It is not just the privilege of being the chief representative of the students at Kingston University that attracts me to write this to you. It is the great pride I have of being part of this university and being given the opportunity to make a massive difference to a university and union which has offered me so much. I will work with great drive to ensure I do all I can to ensure the great services offered by the Student Union to the students continues to run smoothly and continues to listen to you, the students.
How do I feel I can be the man who leads the Student Union into the next academic year and what will I do?
Below are a few points on various aspects of university and university life I will look to preserve or improve in the next term of office, if elected;
Your voice: The Union is an organisation designed to help us students in all manners of University life, whether it be cheap photocopying or to advise students of appealing against disciplinary action taken against a student by the university. Unfortunately, the feedback I get from a lot of students is that they feel they are unaware of the ways their student union can help them. If elected, I will ensure new measures are introduced to increase awareness of our Union and what it does for us.
Politics and Democracy: The government are contemplating reducing the funding towards education and increasing student fees. We simply cannot allow this to happen and I will continue the fight started by Kingston University and Student Union to ensure that fees remain the same and we receive the same financial support from the government. I will also look to increase the students’ awareness of democracy and politics and increase the profile of our university amongst politicians by inviting them to our university so we, the students, can directly question them about our views and hear their ideas.
More Events by the SU:  I will seek to see more events run by the Union on campus. I will encourage all societies to arrange “open” events to boost their profiles and promote understanding between students who are unaware of certain societies.Particular emphasis will be placed on societies involving religion, ethnic minorities and the LGBT societies. The SU bars will be encouraged to hold events more frequently. There will also be events catered towards mature and postgraduate students.
Student Awareness (especially Mental Health): As well as getting societies to run various “open” events to get students aware about various societies, as mentioned above; I will strive to increase the awareness amongst students about mental health and mental illness. One in four students succumb to mental illness yet a lot of them are not aware of what help is present and in many cases there is still a stigma attached to the term “Mental Health”. I will work alongside the NUS and the University in establishing an awareness campaign.
Being Green: I will look into ways of making the Student Union greener and also ensure all forms of recycling are made available in all University halls of residence.
Thank you for taking your time to read this and I hope you vote for Kay Raven.
