The constitutional description for the role of Women's Officer can be found here.

Hi there,

My name is Jo and i'm your Women's Officer, elected in October 2008.  The position of Women's Officer is an important one on the Executive Committee to ensure equal representation, and a friendly face that female students can come to, to discuss issues they are facing such as sexism,  or ask for advice and details of local organisations in times of need.

This year in officer so far has been a fairly busy one.  Leading up to Saturday 22nd November, myself and the LGBT Society Women's Officer, Karisa Lundberg, made placards and many plans to encourage female students to take part in the Reclaim the Night march taking place in central London.  A few of us attended (perhaps due to the freezing temperatures) and marched proudly with our placards with slogans such as 'break the silence' and 'stamp out violence'.

We also organised a self defence class which was unfortunately cancelled at the last minute due to illness on behalf of the team of trainers, but this class will be re-running on Monday 8th December, following publicity and a day spent at Penrhyn Road reception encouraging people to sign up with free J49 highlighters!

These women's events have all been sponsored through a Junction49 volunteering project, and without the help of Martin Crosby (J49) this could not have been possible.  If you are interested in setting up a one-off project or are intrigued to know what Junction49 could offer you, then contact Martin Crosby on M.Crosby@kingston.ac.uk.

Since being on the Executive Team I have been inspired by you, the students, and your dedication to make positive changes in our Union and our University at AGM this October.  The AGM held it's quoracy (minimum number of people with voting rights required to make policy go forward to the policy book) at 4 separate occasions, over 4 hours in 2 different locations which I find truly amazing, given my experience over the last 2 years.  We are certainly moving in the right direction, and I hope that you will continue to support KUSU as we will support you.   Whilst some important policies such as Gender Neutral Toilets (a fellow discrimination and liberation campaign) didn't pass at this AGM, with new Termly General Meetings at which policy can be set, there are many more opportunities for students to influence what the union stands for.  Finally, I would like to thank the Chair of our AGM, Hannah Smith, Post-graduate Officer, and Secretary, Daniel Wakely, Mature Students Officer, Sabbatical Team, and the rest of the Executive Committee for all their work.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to updating you in the very near future on the (hopefully) successful self defence class!

Have a wonderful festive season,

Jo
