Age Concern - The Bradbury Centre

Age Concern opened the Bradbury Active Age Centre in April 2005, in Kingston upon Thames (opposite Knights Park campus). The new centre caters for the more active member who wants to get involved in many pursuits. Their mission is to enable older people in the borough to live with choice, independence and dignity. Join this opportunity and help in a variety of ways; run a regular creative writing class, assist with marketing & fundraising, produce newsletters, work with art group to produce greetings cards, teach members IT, Internet and ‘On-line Shopping’, help with foreign language conversation, assist with lunches and help on reception, help with many other activities or by just chatting to the members. Age Concern - Rayleigh House

Age Concern, Raleigh House, is based in New Malden in a beautiful setting and grounds. The centre has a lovely new dining room, with many facilities for all their members. The Age Concern mission is to enable older people in the borough to live with choice, dignity and independence. You can teach members IT and Internet - 'On-line Shopping', take part in their ‘In-Touch’ scheme contacting housebound people by phone, teach members to use mobile phones, assist with lunches chat to members

Home-Start Kingston works  with families under stress with a child or children under 5. They help with issues including isolation, post-natal depression, multiple births and long-term illness or disability. They recruit and train volunteers to work within the family home, for a few hours per week.  Giving a break to stressed parents, either by helping with the children, or listening while a parent unburdens themselves can make a tremendous difference.Volunteers work within the family home, for a few hours per week, giving a break to stressed parents. Helping with the children or just listening to parental concerns can make a huge difference. Kingston and Richmond Law CentreThe Law Centre advises individuals in regards to social welfare aspects of the law.  They advise individuals from low income backgrounds and manage sessions which give free access to legal advice for the general public. The Law Centre take on case that clarify and extend rights for the public.  It provides legal education, training and information about the law and people's rights. The individual will be required to: answer calls and direct to relevant solicitor or an alternative source of help, help prepare trial bundles for court, carry out general administrative duties including faxing, photocopying and typing. Learn English At Home

LEAH trains and supports volunteer tutors teaching non-English speaking residents who, for various reasons, are unable to attend English classes (e.g. have young children at home or a disability). Roles areas follows: Volunteer Tutor visits a student’s home once a week to teach them English. Students are often isolated and benefit hugely from the one-to-one help. They focus on practical language e.g. for shopping, handling money, attending a doctor’s appointment and travelling on public transport. Admin Assistant: LEAH are looking for someone to help in their small, friendly office. The volunteer will provide vital support for the project, whilst acquiring useful work experience. MEND

MEND is a lifestyle change programme for over-weight children and their families. It tries to reduce obesity levels through a combination of exercise, knowledge and nutrition. It runs projects for kids of 8-11 years in Kingston combining an hour of water or land-based exercise, and an hour of theory. MEND are looking for people to help publicise the programme, and to help run the classes. The class role would involve helping set up the activities, assisting with the exercises (joining in if you like!) and helping children/ parents with the theory sessions.The publicity role would involve helping MEND spread the word about the scheme, and collect and record the children’s data to track their progress. Metropolitan Police Service

The Metropolitan Police Service is famed around the world and has a unique place in the history of policing. It is by far the largest of the police services that operate in greater London. Kingston Borough Police are offering the opportunity to become part of the extended police family by volunteering. The primary aim of the programme is to get local communities more closely involved with their  policing and so improve the service they offer. There are many varied and interesting roles available including: assisting at the front desk of the local police stations, providing administrative support in the Crime Management Unit, Youth Offending Team, Criminal Investigations Department and in ward offices in the borough, helping with the Cadets scheme (young police volunteers aged 14 - 21 years) and training to become a special constable. MeWe Arts and Education

MeWe's aim is to educate and uplift young people through performing arts and culturally based education. Through the celebration of African and Afro-Caribbean culture they promote diversity and community cohesion. The MeWe Youth Theatre Company was recently awarded Youth Theatre Company of 2006.

They also deliver international development work in Southern Africa via education and ICT projects in rural communities. To fund its activities, MeWe engages in Social Enterprise, delivering English and Open Source Software training. A young and vibrant organisation with conscience. The opportunities are numerous: Teaching assistants to help research and create multi-cultural school education pack, Accounting & Bookkeeping assistants, Youth Theatre Production Team, Finance & Marketing assistants, Illustrator/Animator/Media. Student Financial Services

The Money Doctors is part of a nationwide initiative in both Further and Higher Education aimed at improving the financial capability of students and young people. At Kingston University, the Money Doctors are part of the Student Funding Service based in Cooper House. They are Money Advisors, able to offer students help and guidance on financial issues. Assisting the Student Funding Money Doctors to promote good ‘financial health’ amongst students by means of mentoring, working with groups and helping in outreach events run by the Money Doctors throughout the year. Young People’s Services

The Young People’s Service works with young people in the borough over the age of 13 and their services include social workers, the youth offending team, a substance misuse worker, the young living website and teen pregnancy workers. There two roles available: Administrative Assistant: The role involves supporting the work of the team with office based assistance: filing, typing letters, organising, data entry, answering calls, restocking leaflets and sending emails. These tasks would be quite flexible, and the volunteer would have access to a computer. Teen Dreem helper:  Teendream is an under 18 club night which usually runs 4 times a year during half-term and school holidays, and takes place at The Works nightclub in Kingston. Volunteers help run the juice bar, which involves making (non alcoholic) cocktails and ensuring the bar area is kept clean and free from used glasses. For more information contact Alex
